Introduction to Digital Media
A semester program designed to give students a brief overview of the various software programs available in the area of Digital Media. Students will explore digital photography, video editing, Flash and 3D animation

Basic Skills-1 week
Project 1-Business Card • Sample
Students will create a business card. The artwork will be assembled in a page layout format and printed using a preprinted sheet.
Project 2-Clip Art Calendar • Sample
Students will create a calendar which will showcase their ability to manipulate clipart files. Each student will select 4 black & white clipart images. Each image will also be colored and then broken apart, creating 3 different images from each piece of clipart. The images will be used as backgrounds for the 12 months of the year.

Project 1-Monogram • Sample
Students will be able to create a monogram using their first, last & middle initials

Students will be able to use a blank colored document of 480 x 360 size, to create separate jpg files for the following titles:

Digital Photography-2 weeks
Photo 1-Transportation • Sample
A photo of some means of transportation is required. The photo may be of a car, bus, van, tractor, bicycle, shoes or any other means of transportation. People are not to be included in the photo. Again the standard straight on shot of the object is not acceptable. Use you imagination to create a unique look at transportation.
Photo 2-Nature • Sample
A closeup look at the natural world around us is expected for this assignment. Go out and explore the woods; the trees, bushes and rocks around us. The photo should not contain any man made structure or material.
Photo 3-Patterns • Sample
A photograph of patterns, either natural or man made is required. Items such as fallen leaves, shadows, rocks or stones are all examples of natural and random patterns. Items such as rows of bricks, chainlink fences, planted trees, boards on a building are man made patterns. The photo should draw the viewers eye to the pattern immediately.
Photos 4-Filters • Sample
A photo which might please you is required for this exercise. Choose Filter. In the Filter menu explore the various submenus. Remember it is important that a person looking at the photo is still able to recognize the subject after you have used the filters.
Photo 5-Selected Area with Filter • Sample
A photo which might please you is required for this exercise. Using the lasso, accuraately select a portion of yourphoto. You may apply the filter to the selected area of the photo, or you may go to Select/Inverse and apply the filter to the background of the photo.
Photo 6-Filter X4 • Sample
A photo which might please you is required for this exercise. Size the photo to 480 x 360. From the vertical & horizontal rulers pull guidelines to divide the photo into 4 equal sections. You will apply a different filter to each of the 4 sections. The 4 filters should all come from the same grouping in the gallery(Artistics, Brush Strokes, Sketch, Stylize, etc.)
Photo 7-Cloning • Sample
A photo which might please you is required for this exercise. In the tool box select the clone tool. The clone tool will create an exact duplicate of the area you choose. Position the tool over the area you wish to duplicate, hold down the Option key, click the mouse. Move cursor to new area click, hold move mouse and duplicate chosen area.
Photo 8-Where in the world is... • Sample
A photo of yourself is required for this exercise. Size the photo to 480 x 360. You will also need to do an image search online for a photo of a major city. Eliminate the background around yourself and add the city photo as the background. A little bit of text to let us know where in the world you are completes the project.
Photo 9-Landscape/Gradient • Sample
A landscape photo is required for this exercise. Size the photo to 480 x 360. Remove the sky from the original photo and replace with a gradient.

2D Animation -5 weeks
Project 1-Colors • Sample
Students will be able to create a .swf movie in which the background will change at least 4 times. The background will change using geometric shapes.
Project 2-Bouncing Balls • Sample
Students will be able to create a .swf movie that will have four or more balls bouncing around inside the stage. Each ball is to enter at a different time. You decide how everything interacts.
Project 3-Mask & Sound Project • Sample
Students will be able to create a .swf movie that will include a digital photo of the student, a voice file and a mask. The project will be used at the beginning of the digital portfolio.
Project 4-Frame by Frame Animation • Sample
Students will be able to create a .swf movie that will include an animation in which each frame was created individually (ex. stick figure walking/running across screen)
Project 5-Flash Last• Sample
Students will be able to create a swf movie that will bring together proj ects 1 thru 4.
Project 6-Digital Photo portfolio • Sample
Students will be able to create a .swf movie that will include their 12 digital photos. Also included will be a set of navigational buttons to allow the viewer to move forward or backwards thru the presentation.

Video Editing-5 weeks
Project 1-Product Commercial • Sample
Students will be able to create a commercial for a product of their choice. The commercial will meet the following requirements:
1. 30-60 seconds in length
2. the actual product must appear in the commercial
3. you will appear in the commercial
4. at least 3 different video clips
Project 2-Time Motion • Sample
Students will work in video editing to create a movie that shows 1 clip that has been speeded up(cloud movement) and 1 clip that has been slowed down(golf swing) The clips will be combined into 1 movie with titles introducing each movie clip. The sound from each movie is to be removed and appropriate music placed in the background for the entire finished movie.
Project 3-Stop Motion • Sample
Students will be able to create a stop motion video using a series of digital photos. The students will move the objects in an incremental fashion and photograph each scene individially. The photos will be combined as an image sequence and background music will be included.

GarageBand 2 weeks
Music for TimeMotion movie
Students will be able to create a musical soundtrack for their TimeMotion movie created during the video editing portion of the program
My Song
Students will be able to use GarageBand to create their own unique song. The song should run between 2 and 3 minutes in length.
