A new survey of 500 top colleges found that 10% of admissions officers acknowledge looking at social networking sights such as MySpace and Facebook to evaluate students. 38% reported that what they saw “negatively affected” their views of the applicant. Wall Street Journal

The overall average acceptance rate across all four-year colleges has remained around 70%. Grades in college prep courses continue to be the most important factor in college admission decisions. School Counselor Dec. 08

Attention Junior Athletes!!! If you are planning on participating in a sport at a DI or DII school NOW is the time to register on the NCAA Clearinghouse website. Pine Grove Area School District Spring SAT Preparation Program

The program will be held in the evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. beginning Tuesday, April 20th until Thursday, April 29th.   It will be held in the high school in room 213.  The cost of the program will be $25.00.  Registration forms will be made available to all interested students and should be returned to Ms. Lutz in the guidance office first thing Monday, April 19th with your total payment.  All checks should be made payable to the Pine Grove Area School District.

The May SAT will be given at the Pine Grove Area High School on Saturday, May 1, 2010. 
Registration deadline for this test date is Thursday, March 25, 2010.

2010-2011 Vo-Tech Applications

The 2010-2011 school year vo-tech applications are now available in the Guidance Office. The deadline to submit the completed application for acceptance is March 18, 2010.

The Junior Volunteer Program (Ages 13-18)

The Schuylkill Medical Center Junior Volunteer Program gives students an opportunity to explore possible career paths while they obtain rewarding and interesting experiences in a healthcare environment.  The hours may also be counted toward service time for their school curriculum, church, or civic involvement.  Junior volunteers perform a variety of tasks during a minimum of one day per week and generally a minimum of three hours per shift.  Stop in the Guidance office for an application.  Applications must be returned by May 1, 2010.

Work permits

Work permit applications and official permits can be retrieved in the High School Guidance Office. Middle School students, stop in the Middle School's main office to get permission to walk over to the High School. Then, stop in the High School's main office to get directions to the Guidance Office. Work permit applications are not to be brought to the Guidance Office until after being hired by an employer. NCAA Clearinghouse- registration for any student interested in participation in a DI or DII school.

The Princeton Review site has a fun feature called Counselor-O-Matic, which rates your chances of getting into a specific school. Each college listing comes with a link to what students are saying about the school.

Folks at myEssay.com won't write your application essay for you, but they provide tools to help plan an essay strategy, create a resume of achievements, and brainstorm topics. They also have actual essayswith explanations about why they were, and weren't, successful and a fee-based evaluation service.

PSSA stands for Pennsylvania System of School Assessment and is the standardized test given to students in 3rd, 5th, 8th and 11th grades throughout the state.
