Students who live within the Pine Grove Area School District boundaries and are registered with the District are eligible to enroll in Cardinal Virtual Campus for the 2021-2022 school year. -
What are the different enrollment options?
The continuity of instruction is a significant factor in the overall success of student learning each year. PGASD strongly recommends enrolling students for the entire academic year because transitions are extremely disruptive and specific placements are not guaranteed. Students can enroll for either a semester or entire school year.
-
When can students enroll in the PGASD Virtual School?
Open enrollment is scheduled for July 28, 2021 - August 15, 2021. Due to scheduling and staffing, enrollment at the start of the school year is not guaranteed if registered after August 15, 2021. Late applications will be evaluated on an individual basis with notification of status provided as soon as possible. To begin the enrollment process into Cardinal Virtual Campus, please fill out the CVC Enrollment Form during the enrollment window.
-
Does a student need to remain in the Cardinal Virtual Campus for the entire year?
The continuity of instruction is a significant factor in the overall success of student learning each year. PGASD strongly recommends enrolling students for the entire academic year because transitions are extremely disruptive to the learning process.
During the enrollment process, you will be asked to register for a full-year or a semester (half-year). If you select a semester, you are able to extend for the second semester or decide to return to in-person instruction.

Can students with GIEPs, IEPs, and 504s enroll in Cardinal Virtual Campus?
- Definitely! Cardinal Virtual Campus is open to all students. However, given the individualized nature of these plans, we recommend that interested families discuss Cardinal Virtual Campus with their school-based team in order to address specially designed instructional requirements and the program. Or, a meeting will be scheduled after enrollment and prior to registration for classes.
- A Pine Grove Area teacher will oversee a student with an IEP or GIEP as well. They will be involved in IEP meetings and communicating with parents.
-
What is the balance of live (synchronous) and recorded/flexible (asynchronous) instruction?
The balance of synchronous and asynchronous instruction varies by level. Although Pine Grove Area highly recommends attending the synchronous live sessions, attendance is not required, and students can access a recording of the synchronous sessions.
- Elementary: There is a scheduled synchronous English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics lesson each day of the week within the normal school day with an additional option to attend live help sessions at designated times. The schedule is published and available to students on their dashboard in order to let the student create a personalized schedule.
- Secondary: Since students are registered for multiple courses with different teachers, a schedule of live lessons by content area is established at the beginning of the year. For example, Mondays and Wednesdays might be Mathematics and Social Studies courses throughout the day while Tuesdays and Thursdays are for English and Science courses. The schedule is published and available to students on their dashboard in order to let the student create a personalized schedule.
-
Can students participate in extracurricular activities?
- Students will be eligible to be part of any schools’ extracurricular activities held before or after school but need to provide their own transportation to and from the activity. Activities that occur within the school day as part of the brick and mortar program are not open to outside participation. Therefore, at the elementary level, field trips, the instrumental music program, and chorus are not open to Cardinal Virtual Campus students.
- At the secondary level, since athletics, band, chorus, and clubs occur before or after school, virtual students may participate as long as they can provide their own transportation.
-
How is attendance taken in Cardinal Virtual Campus?
Regular attendance is essential for success in school. A student's first responsibility is to attend school regularly and fulfill all requirements. Excessive absences, even when excused, have an impact on learning and student achievement. Students are required to work consistently and to follow the minimum pacing provided in the EdOptions Academy Student Information System (SIS). For more information related to attendance, please consult our program handbook.
-
How do I get help with a technical problem?
- If a student is unable to login due to a technical problem at home (ex., loss of power), the parent/guardian should email cvc@pgasd.com or call 570-345-2731 x275, and explain the problem, if possible.
- If the student is unable to login and suspects the issue may be with Edmentum or the Genius LMS, the parent/guardian can call the EdOptions Support Team at 800-447-5286 from 8AM-7 PM, Monday-Friday. Email [support@edmentum.com] is an option but there is a 48 hours turnaround time.
- If you have a problem with your District issued device please contact the PGASD Help Desk at pga_tech_support@pgasd.com. If you do not have access to email, you can leave a message at 570-345-2731 x339. The PGASD Help Desk is staffed during regular school hours.
-
What type of support is available to struggling students?
- We do ask that parents/guardians strongly consider the Characteristics of a Successful Online Student and Best Practices outlined in the Cardinal Virtual Campus Handbook prior to enrollment. If problems or struggles emerge after the year starts, students and parents/guardians should first reach out to the teacher(s) to discuss the issues and attempt to devise a plan to address the concerns. The EdOptions Academy teachers are in regular contact with Pine Grove Area School District as well. If a student is unable to meet the minimum goals outlined in the Cardinal Virtual Campus Handbook, the student and parent/guardian will be required to attend a meeting with PGASD Administration in order to discuss removal from the online program.
-
What are the qualifications of the Cardinal Virtual Campus teachers?
The EdOptions Academy teachers are certified in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and receive specialized training related to online instruction. 95% of those employed across EdOptions have at least 3 years of experience.
-
How are course materials and manipulatives provided to students?
Course materials such as textbooks are digitally linked within the LMS for student access. There are no physical textbooks. There may be common household items suggested at the start of certain lessons such as coins, cups, or paper towels. Students or parents/guardians can reach out to the teacher if there is ever a suggested item that is not available so other arrangements can be made.
-
What credentials do I use? How do you communicate with teachers?
- Students enrolled in Cardinal Virtual Campus will use their credentials to login to the Chromebook, which will also sign them in to the Google Workspace programs (i.e., Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Forms, etc.). THey will also have access to student email through this platform. Their email address will end in @student.pgasd.com. They will use this email to communicate with teachers as well as PGASD staff.
- Edmentum provides all students with login credentials to their Learning Management System (LMS). Tutorials are provided at the beginning of the school year.
-
What type of technology requirements are required for enrollment in Cardinal Virtual Campus?
- Each student in K-12 is issued a district-issued Chromebook. It is preferred that all student work is completed on this device, which will set students up for success and will allow for technical support and content filtering. Since this program is web-based, the platform can be accessed from any device.

How are transitions handled for students that are moving between brick & mortar and cyber?
The continuity of instruction is a significant factor in the overall success of student learning each year. PGASD strongly recommends enrolling students for the entire academic year or at least for a full semester. Transitions are extremely disruptive and can cause gaps in learning. Parents/guardians are asked to commit to a full-year or semester at registration. If a transition prior to the chosen commitment deadline is deemed necessary, parents/guardians will meet with the PGASD Site Coordinator to discuss whether or not it is feasible.
